Prince of Wales Theatre

Coventry Street, London W1D 6AS

The Prince of Wales Theatre is located on the corner of Coventry Street and Oxendon Street, near Leicester Square in the City of Westminster.

This West End Theatre was formally known as the Prince’s Theatre and opened its doors in January 1884. The Prince of Wales Theatre was named after the prince who later became King Edward VII.  It was in 1886 that the theatres name was changed to the Prince of Wales Theatre. In 1937 this London theatre was rebuilt and again in 2004 it went under an extensive refurbishment by Sir Cameron Mackintosh who is the current owner of the Theatre today. Beneath the stalls in this west end theatre is a large spacious bar which there is an excellent dance floor which the theatre previously used for tea dances.

The Prince of Wales Theatre earliest hits were comic operas, but the unusual art of mine was also popularized in this west end theatre. In 1959 the London Theatre staged a number of successful productions such as The World of Susie Wrong. Andrew Llyod Webbers musical Aspects of Love was the longest running production at The Prince of Wales Theatre which ran for 1,300 performances. The Royal Highness the Prince of Wales attended the grand reopening ceremony of the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004 with the production of Mamma Mia which has broken records as the longest running show in The Prince of Wales Theatre.

The Prince of Wales has established itself as a Grade II listed building in London’s West End. The Theatre is currently run by Delfont Mackintosh Theatres Ltd.
