Theatre Royal Drury Lane

The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane is located in Covent Garden. This is one of London’s oldest theatres dating back to 1663. For 200 years, it hosted spoken plays and dramas. In 1672 fire destroyed the original building of the London Theatre the next building was designed by Christopher Wren and theatre re-opened in 1674.  After 120 years, it was destroyed again and rebuilt again in 1791. Fifteen years later The Theatre Royal was destroyed again by another fire. The present building has existed since 1812 and is part of the Really Useful Theatre Group.

The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane has been home to many famous shows in its history, from plays to musicals. Although for first 200 years, this venue hosted only spoken plays and dramas. Recent musicals that have been staged at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane include “Miss Saigon” running for 10 years. 

The Theatre is also one of London’s most haunted venues with ‘The Man in Grey’ wandering the venue looking like an 18th Century nobleman. Seeing the figure is supposed to bring good luck to the performer, unlike the luck of the figure himself who is said to be the ghost of a man murdered at the venue

Facilities at the venue are superb, with bars at each level and excellent Grand Saloon on the Royal Circle level. The grand staircase is a unique centrepiece to the theatre and leads to the Royal Circle.
